How to Save Money on Groceries

Over the years, I have learned a few tips that have helped me not only to save money but to eat healthier and become more aware of what we nurture our bodies with. I wanted to dedicate a blog post to share these tips with you because they have been very helpful to us (#adulting). So, here are the steps I follow when it comes to groceries.

  • Budget- the first step we take when planning meals and grocery shopping is to set a budget for food. Depending on how often you go to the grocery store, divide the budget by this number. We have a monthly budget for food, which is divided by four because we buy groceries weekly.

  • Take inventory- before creating a menu for the week or your grocery list, make sure to check what you already have at home and plan around that. For example, if you have veggies in the refrigerator that might be good for a few more days, try to make a meal with those so they don’t go to waste. Or let’s say you have pasta in your pantry, you could make one of your meals for the week a pasta dish.

  • Plan your week- this can be a little hard for some, but this will save you time and money at the grocery store and during food preparation. With the foods you already have at home, try to plan as many days as you realistically can. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to meal prep (a whole different story) but having an idea of what you might make will help you save money. How? well, if you get home from work or school tired and hungry and you have no idea of what you will be making for dinner or all of the ingredients, you are more likely to either go out to grab some takeout or make something that doesn’t take too long (like a frozen meal, for example), which are usually highly processed. Also, make sure you include all food groups in your menu plan.

  • Make your grocery list- once you have planned what you will be eating for the week, you can now make the grocery list. This list will include all the foods you need to complete the meals you are preparing. For example, let’s say you are making tacos (#tacotuesday) and you already have the tortillas, you would only need to by the meat and the toppings (onion + cilantro or pico de gallo) and you might even have veggies at home that you could use as the toppings.

  • Grocery shopping- Stick to the grocery list! We all have forgotten our grocery list every now and then (or always lol) and end up guessing and forgetting a few items. this can lead to over spending. Now days most smartphones have some type of note taking app (we use the Reminders app from iTunes) so take advantage of that. Try to buy only what’s on the grocery list but consider making changes if similar items are on sale.
